What One Symbol is

One Symbol publishes one entry a day about a symbol and a real object that carries it. Each entry is researched and sourced, corrected when it is wrong, and credited to the collection the object belongs to.

Free and paid

Without paying, you can read today's entry and the previous seven days, and run five archive searches a month. A paid subscription opens the whole archive, the long reads, saving, unlimited search and streaks.

Prices are shown at the point of purchase. Purchases made through an app store are billed and refunded by that store under its own terms, and subscriptions renew until cancelled in your app store account.

The writing

The text of every entry — the hook, the description, the essay, the Knot and the sources — belongs to One Symbol. It is for your own reading. Quoting a short passage with a credit is welcome. Republishing entries in whole or in substantial part, or using them to train a model, or scraping the app in bulk, is not permitted.

The images

Every image in One Symbol is a photograph of a real object that is in the public domain or released under CC0 by the collection that holds it. The credit line beneath each image names the object, the collection and the licence. No image in One Symbol is generated by a machine. Those images carry their own licences and are not covered by the paragraph above.

Your account

Keep your sign-in details to yourself, and use the app for reading rather than for attacking it. An account may be closed if it is used to break these terms; you can delete yours at any time in Settings → Delete account, or by writing to hello@onesymbol.app.

An account comes with the daily email: one symbol a day, at an hour you choose. You can decline it when you create the account, switch it off in Settings, or stop it in one click from any email you have been sent. It is the publication rather than advertising, and turning it off changes nothing else about your account.

Getting things wrong

The entries are researched and sourced, and they are still capable of being wrong. Corrections are wanted: write to hello@onesymbol.app and the entry will be fixed and the change noted. Nothing here is professional, medical, legal or financial advice.

Availability and liability

One Symbol is offered as it is. It is not promised to be uninterrupted or error-free. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. Otherwise liability is limited to the amount you have paid in the twelve months before the claim.

Changes and law

These terms may change; the date at the top will say when. They are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. Your statutory rights as a consumer are unaffected.
